Check the complete saildrive model
Do not select a part based only on the engine model. The saildrive has its own type designation, such as SD20, SD30, SD40 or SD50. This designation is normally shown on the identification plate attached to the saildrive.
Parts that fit one model may not fit another. There can also be differences between versions of the same saildrive. Compare the original Yanmar part number whenever possible and check the models listed on the product page.
For anodes, select the correct material for the water in which the boat is used and follow the recommendations for your installation. Also check whether the product contains only the anode or a complete kit with brackets and mounting hardware.
Inspect seals, oil and bellows
Check the saildrive oil regularly. Discolored or milky oil can indicate that water is entering through a worn seal. Fishing line around the propeller shaft can also damage the output-shaft seals.
Rubber bellows and diaphragms should be inspected for age, cracking, damage and signs of leakage. Follow Yanmar’s replacement interval for your exact saildrive and installation. Replacing these parts usually requires access around the saildrive and should be planned carefully.
