Choosing the correct coolant
Coolant carries heat away from the engine and protects the inside of the cooling system against corrosion, deposits and freezing. Using the correct type is important, especially when the system contains aluminum and other metals.
Here you will find coolant and antifreeze from
Volvo Penta,
Yanmar and Eurol. The products include ready-mixed coolant, concentrated antifreeze and long-life coolant in different pack sizes.
Check the specification, not only the color
Coolant is commonly green, blue, pink, yellow or orange, but the color alone does not tell you whether two products can be mixed. Products with the same color can still use different formulations.
Before ordering, check:
- The coolant specification in the engine manual
- Whether the product is ready mixed or concentrated
- The required protection against freezing
- The amount needed to refill the system
- Which coolant is already in the engine
Do not mix different coolant types unless the manufacturer confirms that they are compatible. An incorrect mixture can reduce corrosion protection or cause deposits inside the cooling system.
Replacing the coolant
Allow the engine to cool completely before opening the system. Hot coolant can remain under pressure and cause serious burns.
When changing to another type, the old coolant may need to be drained completely and the system flushed first. Concentrated antifreeze must be mixed in the correct ratio with suitable water. Follow the instructions on the product and in the engine manual.
After filling, bleed the system when required. Run the engine, allow it to cool again and recheck the level.
If the old coolant contains oil, rust or heavy contamination, inspect the heat exchanger, circulation pump and other
cooling-system parts before refilling.
