Choosing the correct alternator
Do not select an alternator by appearance alone. Two units can look very similar but have different mounting points, electrical connections or output ratings.
Before ordering, check:
- The original part number
- Whether the system is 12 or 24 volts
- The output in amps
- The position and type of electrical connections
- The mounting points and adjustment bracket
- The pulley diameter and belt type
- Whether a W terminal is needed for the tachometer
The complete engine model is useful, but the number on the old alternator is usually the best reference. Also compare any Volvo Penta, Yanmar, Bosch, Valeo, Mitsubishi or Denso numbers shown on the unit.
Some engines were supplied with different alternators during their production period. A higher-output alternator may also have been fitted later, so the engine model alone does not always identify the correct replacement.
Check the charging system first
A battery that does not charge properly does not always mean that the alternator has failed. A loose or worn
drive belt, corroded connection, damaged cable, poor ground or faulty battery can cause similar problems.
Check the belt condition and tension, battery terminals and main charging cables before replacing the alternator. If possible, measure the battery voltage with the engine stopped and again while it is running.
