Fuel filters

A fuel filter keeps dirt, rust and other contamination from reaching the injection pump and injectors. Many boats have two filters: a primary filter or water separator between the tank and engine, followed by a second filter mounted on the engine. Choosing the correct filter

The safest way to find the correct fuel filter is by using the original part number. This number can usually be found on the old filter, in the engine manual or in the parts catalogue for your engine. Do not order a filter based only on its appearance or outside dimensions. The thread, seal and internal construction can be different even when two filters look almost identical. Always check the complete engine model as well, because the filter may have changed between different engine versions. If you cannot find the correct filter, send us your engine model, serial number and the number printed on the old filter. A clear photo of the filter and filter housing can also help us check it.

Replacing a fuel filter

Follow the replacement interval given by the engine manufacturer. The filter should also be checked if you find water or dirt in the fuel, or if the engine starts losing power under load. These problems can have several causes, but a blocked fuel filter is one of the first things worth checking. When fitting a new spin-on filter, make sure the old sealing ring has not remained stuck to the housing.
