Impellers for Volvo Penta
The impeller sits inside the seawater pump and circulates cooling water through the system. Because its flexible rubber blades are constantly bent while the pump turns, the impeller gradually hardens and wears.
A damaged impeller can reduce the flow of cooling water and cause the engine to overheat. It is therefore an important item to inspect and replace during regular maintenance.
Here you’ll find impellers and impeller kits for many Volvo Penta models, including engines from the D1, D2, D3, D4, D6, MD, TAMD, KAD and 2000 Series. Depending on the application, you can choose between genuine Volvo Penta parts and good aftermarket alternatives.
Choosing the correct impeller
Impellers can look very similar while differing in diameter, width, shaft type or number of blades. Volvo Penta has also used different seawater pumps on engines within the same series.
Before ordering, check:
- The complete engine model
- The Volvo Penta part number
- The number on the old impeller
- The seawater-pump model, if known
- The compatible models listed on the product page
Some products contain only the impeller, while an impeller kit may also include a gasket, O-ring or lubricant. Check the product contents so you know exactly what is included.
Replacing and inspecting the impeller
Inspect the impeller for cracks, missing blades, permanent bending or hard rubber. If a blade is missing, try to find it in the cooling system. Broken pieces can restrict water flow further along the system.
Check the pump cover, gasket and wear plate while the pump is open. A badly worn cover or damaged sealing surface can reduce pump performance even after a new impeller has been fitted.
Turn the impeller in the correct direction during installation and use a suitable lubricant when required. Never run the seawater pump dry, as this can damage a new impeller very quickly.

If you cannot identify the correct impeller, send us the engine model, serial number and the part number or dimensions of the old impeller. A clear photo can also help.
